Heathen

about

After finishing work on 'Providence'- which was an intense and emotionally draining experience- I mostly set my guitar to one side to work on this little palette cleanser. Bowie- my all-time musical idol and guiding (black)star- had passed and while I had toyed with the idea of paying musical tribute to the man for many years, his sudden absence gave certain works of his a deeper resonance than I had felt before. It's funny how that happens. His generally underrated album 'Heathen' was one such work and the title track in particular. I connect very much with the world-weary vulnerability of 'Later Bowie'. Here is an extraordinary man who had lived many extraordinary lives and left each one behind without glancing back- until now. From a higher perch of hard-earned wisdom, he could assess the triumphs and regrets of his existence. Some successes tarnish with age and some heartaches remain with you for a lifetime. And visa-versa, I suppose, but that's not what I hear in this song. "I can see it now. I can feel it die." Bowie lives forever.

Love,
Nicolas

lyrics

Steel on the skyline
Sky made of glass
Made for a real world
All things must pass
Waiting for something
Looking for someone
Is there no reason?
Have I stared too long?

You say you'll leave me
And when the sun is low
And the rays high
I can see it now
I can feel it die
Oo-o
Oo-o
